2011 – Junior Cybersecurity Investigator – Basic Plan

Basic Meeting Plans are designed to have minimal supplies and still hit the GSUSA Requirements. Most meetings can be done in a 90 minute time frame.

Items Needed:

  • Tent cards or signs for each station (See list on ID Theft Stations activity instructions)
  • Pens/Pencils
  • Paper (several for each scout)
  • Index cards with pre-written Identity Theft Scenarios (cut out and glued to separate cards) (You can use VTK Identity Theft Scenarios by GSUSA)
  • List for each station of which scenarios apply to them (See list on ID Theft Stations activity instructions)
  • (Optional) Stickers
  • (Optional) Ink pads and 7 different stamps
  • VTK Phishy Messages for each team of two scouts (Sample Message 1 is fake, Sample Message 2 is real, pre-cut them so you can give them one message at a time)
  • VTK Is It Phishy by GSUSA, one for each team of two scouts
  • Highlighter, one for each team of two scouts
  • VTK Cipher Key and Puzzles, one for each scout
  • Whiteboard with examples of alphabet and shift cipher codes

Meeting Start

Always plan for 5-10 minutes to allow scouts to arrive and your troop’s opening routines.

Fun Activity: Game: Broken Telephone

Time Expected*: 15 minutes

Activity 4 – Cipher Codes

(Requirement 1 Earned)

Fun Activity: GSUSA Cipher Puzzle

Time Expected*: 25 minutes

Meeting End

Always plan for 5-10 minutes for clean up and Closing Routines

Scouts can make new codes for the GSUSA Cipher Puzzle, or create a new shift cypher key until it’s time to go home.

General Notes

  • The Basic Plans from The Badge Archive are designed to earn one official GSUSA badge per level per meeting to remain budget-friendly.
  • Some badges require two meetings to complete. This allows scouts to fully enjoy the activities while keeping costs low by only needing one GSUSA badge for every two meetings.
  • For troops that wish to give scouts a badge or patch for every meeting, a fun patch can be awarded during one of the two sessions. Scouts attending only one meeting can earn the fun patch, while those attending both will receive both the fun patch and the GSUSA badge.

  • Troops may take more or less time depending on their scouts’ abilities and interests. Plan your meetings accordingly to suit your troop’s unique needs.
