2011 – Junior App Development – Basic Plan

Basic Meeting Plans are designed to have minimal supplies and still hit the GSUSA Requirements. Most meetings can be done in a 90 minute time frame.

Items needed:

  • Paper for each scout
  • Pen/Pencil for each scout
  • Troop coloring supplies (markers, crayons, or colored pencils)
  • (Optional) Printout and cut the App Icons cards (one set for each small group)
  • (Optional) Simple Jigsaw Puzzle or Printout of a Free Jigsaw Puzzle

Decomposition Fun

Info Needed: Decomposition is the process of breaking a big thing into little things. Like taking a toy apart into separate parts. Or taking a big task, like cleaning your room, and making little ones, like picking up toys and making the bed.

Fun Activity: Use the Jigsaw puzzle and follow the steps Decomposition Puzzle activity.

(Requirement 2 Earned)

Note to Leaders – You can learn more about decomposition with short video or a mini lesson

What’s an App?

Info Needed: App stands for application. An application is a computer program designed for a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet. There are many types of apps. Most kids know of game apps, but they might also know educational apps, reading apps, and apps for learning languages. Adults use apps to track their time, their diets, their medical stuff, and other information. Apps can be used to learn things, organize things, and much more.

Question Needed: What App would you make?

(Optional) Fun Activity: Break up into small groups and use the App Icons cards. Scouts can sort apps into piles of “Helpful”, “Learning”, and “Entertainment”. Compare the groups to see how close everyone was.

(Requirement 1 Earned)

User Centered App

Info Needed: User centered design is when you design something while keeping in mind who is going to use it. If you design an app for kids, it should be simple and easy for a kid to use. If you design an app for a doctor, it should be able to give them all the data they need, or connect them to their patients easily. The app you make all depends on who is going to use it.

Action Needed: Scouts draw what their app screen (with a specific user in mind) would look like – decomposing their app idea into different parts. (Like an app to help with homework might have a button for help and a button to submit to the teacher on the screen.)

(Optional): They can choose their own user, or use the App Users from GSUSA to give the scouts a person they are going to design an app for.

(Requirement 3 Earned)

Make an event!

Info Needed: Conditional statements are If/Then statements. If it is raining, then I will use an umbrella.

Action Needed: Write a statement and draw a new screen showing what will change if a condition is met.

(Requirement 4 Earned)

(Optional): Share some App Conditionals

Share It!

Action Needed: Scouts share their app screens and get feedback from their troopmates.

(Requirement 5 Earned)

Meeting End

Scouts can keep adding new conditionals and screens for their app until it’s time to go home.

General Notes

Note to Leaders – No Basic Plan compiled by The Badge Archive will earn multiple badges in one level. Part of being budget friendly is not costing more than the price of one official GSUSA badge per meeting.

Some badges will take two meetings to finish. This helps scouts enjoy activities and keeps the troop budget in mind by only needing one GSUSA badge for every two meetings. Troops may choose to get a fun patch for one of the meetings if scouts want a badge/patch for every meeting. Scouts can earn the fun patch if they only attend one meeting and get a fun patch and the official badge if they go to both.
