2011 – D/B/J Coding Basics – Activity List

All three D/B/J levels have similar requirements. Find the projects that appropriately challenge your troop.

Make sure you hit an activity in each of the 3 areas:

Activity Ideas (listed under each requirement)

Activity #1: Women in Science

  • GSUSA Requirement “Learn about women in computer science”. GSUSA Recommendations – Daisy: Ada Lovelace; Brownie: Grace Hopper; Junior: Margaret Hamilton

Choose one woman in computer science:

Activity #2: Learn Coding Concepts

Daisy, Brownie, and Juniors need Algorithm Concept activity. Brownies and Juniors need a Loop activity. Only Brownies need an Event activity. Only Juniors need a Conditional activity.

Algorithms (All Levels Need)

Daisy: Learn what an algorithm is in programming; Brownie: Learn what an algorithm and a sequence is Junior: Learn what a sequence in an algorithm is.

Loops (Brownie and Junior level needs)

Brownie: Learn what a loop is; Junior: Learn what a loop is and how to use it.

Events (Brownie level needs)

Brownie: Learn what an event is.

Conditionals (Junior level needs)

Junior: Learn about conditionals in programming.

Activity #3: Practice Algorithms

  • Daisy: Sorting algorithms tell a computer how to put information into a list that follows a certain order; Brownie: Using a real life scenario, write an “algorithm” that includes an event; Junior: Write an algorithm with a conditional

Brownie VTK

  • Mtg 1: Patch Quilt Algorithm OR Virtual Patch Quilt, Loop Dance Examples, AND Event Action Game Part 1
  • Mtg 2: Event Action Game Part 2, AND Grace Hopper Card Game

Junior VTK

  • Mtg 1: Rock Paper Scissors, Trail Mix Recipe, Looping Handshakes, and Iffy Dance game (Similar to Loopy Movements)
  • Mtg 2: Simon Says, Don’t Eat Pete Margaret Hamilton, and Conditional Ball Game
