All three D/B/J levels have similar requirements. Find the projects that appropriately challenge your troop.
Make sure you hit an activity in each of the 3 areas:
Activity Ideas (listed under each requirement)
Activity #1: Women in Science
- GSUSA Requirement “Learn about women in computer science”. GSUSA Recommendations – Daisy: Ada Lovelace; Brownie: Grace Hopper; Junior: Margaret Hamilton
Choose one woman in computer science:
- Ada Lovelace
- Grace Hopper
- Grace Hopper Timeline Cards ((Learn Algorithms at the same time!))
- Katherine Johnson
- Margaret Hamilton
- Mary Jackson video
Activity #2: Learn Coding Concepts
Daisy, Brownie, and Juniors need Algorithm Concept activity. Brownies and Juniors need a Loop activity. Only Brownies need an Event activity. Only Juniors need a Conditional activity.
Algorithms (All Levels Need)
Daisy: Learn what an algorithm is in programming; Brownie: Learn what an algorithm and a sequence is Junior: Learn what a sequence in an algorithm is.
- Coloring Algorithm – Daisy level only
- Grace Hopper Timeline Cards ((Learn about Women in Science at the same time!))
- Origami Algorithms
- Patch Quilt Algorithm from GSUSA (Quilt Color Algorithm video from GSUSA)
- Pixel Art Algorithms
- Program a Friend
- Sequence Centered Algorithm
- S’more Algorithms
- Trail Mix Algorithms
- Treasure Algorithm
Loops (Brownie and Junior level needs)
Brownie: Learn what a loop is; Junior: Learn what a loop is and how to use it.
Events (Brownie level needs)
Brownie: Learn what an event is.
Conditionals (Junior level needs)
Junior: Learn about conditionals in programming.
- Conditional Rock, Paper, Scissors (no supplies needed)
- Conditional Simon Says (no supplies needed)
- Daily Conditionals (no supplies needed)
- Don’t Eat Pete
Activity #3: Practice Algorithms
- Daisy: Sorting algorithms tell a computer how to put information into a list that follows a certain order; Brownie: Using a real life scenario, write an “algorithm” that includes an event; Junior: Write an algorithm with a conditional
Choose one activity based on your level:
- Sorting Algorithms – Daisy
- Morning Routine Events – Brownies
- Daily Conditionals – Juniors
