Our Summary* of requirements:
- Learn three areas (how to motivate a team, how to train, and how to assess progress) from a trusted source (coach or experienced athlete, three sports documentaries, OR attend a coaching class/clinic/seminar).
- Find some willing athletes (try Juniors working on their Practice with Purpose badge!), and define your athletes’ objectives for your sessions (individual questionnaire, test skill drills to assess, OR make a goal chart).
- Using the information from steps 1 and 2, design a plan and include one activity (a special warm-up and cool-down, training drills, or add a motivation/teamwork/perseverance message the athletes will open/close each session with).
- Spend four weeks coaching your athletes AND get feedback in one way (add a morale-boosting session with no drills for a group discussion, ask your athletes to coach you on how you’re doing, OR bring in another coach to watch a session and give you feedback).
- Assess their progress at the end of four weeks (attend the event they were training for, hold a post-training assessment, host a celebration that focuses on the goals they accomplished, OR make a “trading card” for each athlete with stats of before and after).
* – This summary is based off the GSUSA booklet activity choices.
