2011 – Brownie Think Like an Engineer – Easter Theme

Plan was designed for a 90 minute meeting, but may run over depending on the troop.

THIS MEETING IS ONLY FOR THE MAIN PROJECTS. Scouts will earn the Think Like an Engineer badge, but not the full journey. A second meeting to do a Take Action Project will be required to change this into a full Journey the scouts will earn. Then they can earn their “Take Action” badge to go with the “Think Like an Engineer” badge.

Items Needed (Optional):

Items Needed for Grab It Challenge:

  • Box of random supplies (include at least):
    • 1 set of tongs
    • 2 paper towel rolls
    • Rubber bands, tape, or string
    • Scissors
    • Pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, or cardboard scraps
    • Any other craft or household items you’d like to add
  • An Easter themed item to grab (e.g., a small toy or object)

Items Needed for Water collection:

  • Cardboard, foam board, or a plastic container (for the base) (You can also use as the base collection an easter themed basket or giant egg shell.)
  • Straws, skewers, or pipe cleaners (for structure)
  • Tape or glue
  • Aluminum foil, plastic wrap, or cardboard (for collecting water)
  • Scissors
  • Small container or bowl (to collect water)
  • Spray bottle (to simulate rain) – Use food coloring to dye the Water a fun Spring Color!!

Items Needed for Peeps Launcher

  • Cardboard tubes or PVC pipes
  • Rubber bands
  • Tape or glue
  • Scissors
  • Peeps – enough for them to eat as well as to launch
  • Ruler or measuring tape

Follow these steps:

Step 1 – Engineering Design Process

Info Needed: We need to know what the Engineering Design Process is!

  • Ask: What’s the problem you need to solve? Think about what you’re trying to do.
  • Imagine: Brainstorm ideas and pick the best one. Get creative!
  • Plan: Draw or write down how you’ll make it. Gather your materials.
  • Create: Build your idea and test it out.
  • Improve: Fix or change things to make it even better.

(Optional – Leaders can use the Printable Poster)

Step 2 (Part 1 of 3) Grab it!

Fun Activity: Use an Easter Themed object for them to try and grab in the Assistant Grabber challenge.

Step 2 (Part 2 of 3) Water Collection

Fun Activity: Use the Water Collection materials for the Water Collection Device challenge. Make sure the spray bottles for water have food coloring in fun spring colors to keep with the Easter Theme. You can also use as the base collection an easter themed basket or giant egg shell.

Step 2 (Part 3 of 3) Peeps Launcher

Fun Activity: Use Peeps instead of balls for the Ball Launching challenge.

Step 3 Plan a Take Action (Optional)

Info Needed: We’ve learned how to tackle hard challenges with these fun projects. Now it’s time to tackle a hard challenge in the world we live. What is a way we can make the world a better place?

Action Required: Pick a Take Action Project (TAP) they can do in a future meeting to turn the Think Like an Engineer badge they just earned into a Journey. This is optional. Troops may just want to earn the badge and keep it without turning it into a Journey. They only earn the “Take Action” badge to go with the Think Like an Engineer Badge after the TAP is complete.

Meeting End

Scouts can keep launching Peeps until it’s time to go home.

General Notes

Some badges will take two meetings to finish. This helps scouts enjoy activities and keeps the troop budget in mind by only needing one GSUSA badge for every two meetings. Troops may choose to get a fun patch for one of the meetings if scouts want a badge/patch for every meeting. Scouts can earn the fun patch if they only attend one meeting and get a fun patch and the official badge if they go to both.

IF THEY LIKE PEEPS – Think about doing an extra meeting with more Peep Activities to earn a Peep Themed Fun Patch.
